Realtek Card Reader for HP Envy Ultrabook

In a previous post titled Fix Atheros WiFi for Ubuntu 12.10 on HP Envy Ultrabook I explained how I was able to fix the wireless problem.

Another feature of this Ultrabook which didn’t work out-of-the-box was its Card Reader. The list of hardware can be generated by running the command:

sudo lspci

The output I got was:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor DRAM Controller (rev 09)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family USB xHCI Host Controller (rev 04)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 04)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev c4)
00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 2 (rev c4)
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation HM77 Express Chipset LPC Controller (rev 04)
00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile SATA Controller [RAID mode] (rev 04)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 04)
01:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5289 (rev 01)
01:00.2 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 0a)
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

The highlighted line shows in my case shows Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5289 which needed help. The steps I followed were:

Download the required package

wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971876/+attachment/2991730/+files/rts_bpp.tar.bz2

Uncompress and open the folder

tar jxf rts_bpp.tar.bz2
cd rts_bpp/

Compile it

make
make install

Copy the compiled file to its required destination

sudo cp rts_bpp.ko /lib/modules/3.5.0-22-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi -f

A reboot and now your Card Reader should start working.

Alternatively you can try these commands also, though I didn’t try it myself:

wget http://planet76.com/drivers/realtek/rts-bpp-dkms_1.1_all.deb
sudo apt-get install dkms
sudo dpkg -i rts-bpp-dkms_1.1_all.deb
echo 'DRIVERS=="rts_bpp", ENV{ID_DRIVE_FLASH_SD}="1"' | sudo tee -a /lib/udev/rules.d/81-udisks-realtek.rules

Either of these methods should work for you.
